• Amaury Marti Watch

Amaury Marti is currently hitting .424/.509/.633 in 39 games for the Mexican Red Devils of the Mexican League, also known as Liga de Amaury Cazana. Bud Selig ordered the Cardinals to banish him to there, in fear of the major leagues losing competitive balance.

Amaury also refuses to accept the watch curse. He has the power to curse, and the power to bless.

Sickels on the Cards’ prospects

John Sickels has his 2007 rankings for the Cardinal prospects, here’s his top 10, complete with grades and comments:

  • Colby Rasmus, OF, Grade B+ (solid all around tools and skills)
  • Jaime Garcia, LHP, B (came out of nowhere last year)
  • Jon Jay, OF, B (I really like him and I think he is underrated)
  • Adam Ottavino, RHP, B (needs to improve control)
  • Bryan Anderson, C, B-  (good bat and defense has improved)
  • Chris Perez, RHP, B-  (fireballing reliever should move fast)
  • Cody Haerther, OF, B-  (interesting bat but needs more power)
  • Blake Hawksworth, RHP, C+ (seems to have overcome shoulder trouble but doesn’t throw as hard)
  • Tyler Greene, SS, C+  (imagine Rob Deer, with speed, playing shortstop with a good glove)
  • Mark McCormick, RHP, C+ (throws hard, bad command)

See the full listing here.

I’m still working on my rankings, but at first glance I have no major disagreements. While I agree with Sickels that Jon Jay is underrated, I wouldn’t put him that high. People grumble about his lack of power, but he’s just 21, and he’s listed at 200 lbs, so it’s not impossible to believe he can develop it.

The Rob Deer comp for Greene seems about right, which is why I’m wondering why he ended up ranking so high.

  1. He ranked Greene so high because he’s a SS. Deer broke into the league playing a position that requires power - so it would be impressive to get that out of a SS, who doesn’t need to hit much to break into the major league (see Cesar Izturis).
