- No news on Narvie besides what erik posted earlier. Got to hope that it’s nothing serious. Belated Congratulations to Manager Chris Maloney who notched his 1000 victory last night. Hell of a way to reach a milestone using 6 relievers.
- Rick Ankiel went 2-for-4 with his 9th homerun. He’s definitely got plus power and the contact skills seem to be there.
- Rico Washington also hit a homerun.
- Edgar Gonzalez accounted for the only other run scoring on a wild pitch in the 5th.
- Brendan Ryan still hasn’t pulled out of his season long slump. He’s show signs of life but recorded another 0-for-4 night.
- Mike Parisi was lit up for 10 runs in 4.2 innings.
Springfield 1, Wichita 6 (7 innings)
- Be sure to drop by Viva El Birdos for an interview with prospect Jon Jay. Sounds like his wrist wasn’t hurt too badly after sliding into third about a week ago.
- Short game as Springfield was supposed to have a double header but Hammons Field got poured on and they didn’t get started till 9pm with the first game.
- Juan Encarnacion walked twice while going 0-for-1.
- Colby Rasmus went 1-for-2 with his 5th stolen base of the season.
- 3B Juan Lucena went 2-for-3 with a double.
- Allegedly Eric Haberer walked a batter in the first before the rain delay. But the box score and the game log seem to be in disagreement about that. . .for whatever that’s worth.
- Jose Garcia came in after the rain delay to pitch 4 innings allowing 6 runs (5 earned) on 2BBs and 3Ks.
- Nick Webber finished out with 3 innings of scoreless ball.
- Ian Church was the only real offensive force tonight going 3-for-4 with a triple.
- Nathan Southard and Shane Robinson were the only other players to reach base twice.
- Palm Beach used a trio of hurlers (each of them threw 3 innings) tonight starting with Kyle McClellan. He allowed 3 runs with 1 BB and 1 K. Donnie Smith struck out 4 and walked 1 allowing only an unearned run. Scott Vander Weg completed the game allowing a solo HR with 2 Ks and 1BB.
- Brandon Buckman was just a single shy of the cycle going 3-for-4. I guess if I was crushing the ball like he is every at bat, I wouldn’t walk very often either. Including today’s game, Buckman has a 1.042 OPS for the season. That includes an ISO of .312 with his .344 AVG and a 17% strikeout rate (which is towards the upper end of where you want that number to be, but still good). That level of ISO is quite literally Pujols-ian.
- Jaime Landin went 1-for-3 with a walk.
- Christian Reyes went 2-for-4 with a HR.
- Shaun Garceau had an ugly start allowing 6 ER on 6 hits, 4Ks and 2 BBs.
- Michael Schellinger relieved him throwing a scoreless inning with 1K and 1 BB.
- Then came Eddie Degerman: 4 innings, 1 ER, 1 BB and . . . . . 8(!) strikeouts. He also hit a batter and had a wild pitch. I’d imagine that his delivery could lead to some crazy wild pitches when he losses his release point. (erik posted some pictures and notes on his delivery a few days back.)

You said Schellinger has a pretty rough name for a pitcher. I think only Grant Balfour could possibly be worse, just off the top of my head.
When I saw Buckman this past weekend, he looked a lot like Chris Duncan size wise and he does have some pop in his bat. He’s certainly putting up some great numbers. He played 4 years at Nebraska and is 23, so I’m tempering my expectations to Randy Roth levels for now.
I really like watching Eddie Degerman pitch. If he can find some control and make it to the show I think he could be a fan favorite. I believe he irons his cap a-la Reyes and his delivery is more unique and quirky than Dontrelle Willis’.
Just wanted to drop in and say that I live in Lansing and got to see Degerman pitch last Thursday… 3 IP, 8 K’s, like you said. I was so impressed that I spent some time this morning looking the guy up to see what his story was, and it led me to your website.
When I was watching him pitch, my first impression from his crazy windup was that he would probably be pretty wild. Sure Nuff, he walked a couple of guys in the first inning he pitched, but after that, the strikeouts just kept coming. He didn’t seem to lose much velocity when he had to go to the slide step, either, which I thought would hurt his effectiveness.
He was fun to watch pitch… I’m hoping I get to see this guy work again.
