He’s no Dominican in a Cuban wrapper, folks. Marti is a real Cuban, and he’s putting a charge in the ball south of the border for the Mexican League Minaltitlan Oilers. I’m sure most of you have seen the Marti watch by now on the homepage, Marti has a robust .344/.420/.542 batting line with 6 homers in 131 at bats.
However, what’s more encouraging to me is the amount of discipline he is showing right now. In his profile, I noted that his main weakness has been his plate discipline and ability to make contact. Between Palm Beach, Springfield and the Arizona Fall League, Marti has struck out in over 26% of his at bats. So far this season, he’s cut that strikeout rate nearly in half, fanning in 15% of his ABs in Mexico. His BB/K ratio has increased from a rather poor .28 to a very nice .79.
All the while he’s putting the ball in play and has maintained his power. I don’t know what all the equivalent on all this is, or how much Marti is on the organization’s radar as a 32 year old outfielder, but he’s certainly making his case.
