Paul - I never said he had many issues. I said he has serious issues, namely, not being able to find the strikezone and walking too many batters. He’s got potential but he also has glaring weaknesses.

Ryan - Having two cost controlled catchers isn’t bad thing if only to save on wear and tear. Anderson should be the starter if he continues to hit, however. Hoffpauir may not be equipped to handle SS but he should get a look at 2B if he continues to hit. Getting Aaron Miles off the roster would be a plus. Mather will probably get a look in Spring Training as well but I see his ETA more around mid-2008. I’m reluctant to make projections for them until we see a little more hitting in AAA.

Erik - My concern is that he’s walking so many batters in AA. What happens when he reaches the big leagues and his strikeout rate drops and hit rate climbs? His percentages aren’t sustainable, imo. Bobby Jenks walks half as many guys as Perez does. I’m not denying his potential or stuff but this walk rate is concerning to me. It’s the difference between him being a lock-down closer and a middle reliever. Turnbow actually seems like a good example: when he can control his walk rate he’s a great closer. When he can’t, he’s a ticking time bomb.

Balkroth/Shhh — could be that they are evaluating it from a fantasy perspective. Good point.

AZ, you think they might have overvalued Perez is because he is a future closer, and this is a more of fantasy site, which counts saves?

Completely agreed about Perez over Anderson, although I honestly would have ranked Anderson ahead of Garcia. The one thing I always wonder with Rotoworlds rankings is if they are for future fantasy impact, or future value as a player.

while i agree perez is overrated some, striking out over 35% of the batters you face is pretty fantastic. motte may be close to or better then perez performance wise, but motte’s an ex-catcher with 1 good pitch, a fastball. perez throws 97 and has a dominating slider. if he could just shave his bb/pa rate to about 15%, he’d be mlb ready. derrick turnbow and bobby jenks are just 2 relievers that have had just as severe walk issues like perez and have found there way to being pretty dang valuable to their respective clubs.

A couple of questions…

What do you guys know about that Beau guy playing in one of the short season leagues? I’ve heard a few people mention over at CT that he should get a nod to QC.

And a question about Anderson now. If he finishes the year over .300, he should be a lock to unseat uber-prospect Brian Esposito at Memphis. And if he continues to do well at Memphis…then what? Do we (finally) wave good-bye to our good-field, no-hit catcher Yadi Mo?

Now on to Mather and Hoffpauir (I’m full of ‘em tonight). I’ve suggested that if he does well the rest of the season at Memphis, that Joe Mather should get a fair shot at starting in right field next season. And if Hoffpauir does well, he should get a chance at second base or shortstop. What do you guys think they could do?

While I agree that Anderson is underrated and Perez overrated, I disagree that Perez “has many issues”. As of now, Izzy will be a Card for another year and a half (ie–plenty of time to work out the kinks). 2 stellar pitches can equal a great closer. I like seeing Ottavino finally gaining some recognition. He may be our best prospect by the end of next year. Although, I agree that he certainly won’t be ready for the bigs until 2009. I could see him in long relief in ‘09. Next up for these top 100-150 lists—-Tyler Freaking Herron!
