• Amaury Marti Watch

Amaury Marti is currently hitting .424/.509/.633 in 39 games for the Mexican Red Devils of the Mexican League, also known as Liga de Amaury Cazana. Bud Selig ordered the Cardinals to banish him to there, in fear of the major leagues losing competitive balance.

Amaury also refuses to accept the watch curse. He has the power to curse, and the power to bless.

7/17/07 Daily Prospect Report

Goold has the latest scoop on Kozma, saying the team hopes to sign him by next week.

Jocketty said he does not think Kozma will be unsigned by the deadline. The player taken two picks ahead of Kozma received a $1.4 million signing bonus and the Cardinals’ next pick, 36th overall, received a $650,000 bonus. “I hope to get this moving in the next couple days,” said Jocketty, who is handling the negotiations with Kozma’s representatives. “It’s important to get him out there and playing.”

Again, I say he needs to take the money the Cards offered or leave it. I know today I said I am hoping he doesn’t sign, but if he does it won’t make me unhappy, either. Not in the least. I want to be wrong about my judgments regarding Kozma, I really do. The org should have more info that any source and they like him, so that accounts for much. I still stand by my statements, and that’s my last word on it, at least for now.

Baseball America has their midseason top 25, and Colby Rasmus is listed at #12 overall. They also say Bryan Anderson has a very good shot breaking into the Top 100 for 2008.

Rasmus was back in Springfield’s lineup after sitting out the last 2 games after getting plunked in the head off a hanging curve.

David Eckstein has his own step stool giveaway night for the Lowell Spinners-

David Eckstein, last season’s World Series MVP, began his professional career in 1997 with the Lowell Spinners. The diminutive shortstop hit .301, stole 21 bases, and walked more times than he struck out, setting the stage for the success he would go on to achieve. On Friday, the Spinners will celebrate the 5-foot-6 Eckstein in a tongue-in-cheek manner by distributing “David Eckstein World Series MVP Step Stools” to the first 1,500 fans in attendance. Hopefully, this promo starts a trend throughout the Minors. Personally, I’d like to see a David Wells bathroom scale giveaway.

Good times.

And away we go…

Memphis 1, Oklahoma 7

  • Randy Keisler needs to be taken for a long drive in the country. He allowed 6 runs on 12 hits.
  • Chris Lambert the hit a batter and walked 2, gave up 2 hits while striking out 2 and allowing 2 runs.
  • Jarret Hoffpauir went 0 for 4 in the first time in forever. What’s interesting is he played 3rd base for the game.
  • Not much else to see here…

Springfield 4, Tulsa 5

  • Colby Rasmus went 0 for 3 with a walk and a strikeout. I’d like to see him get sizzling hot again, real soon.
  • Mark Shorey went 3 for 4 with a double.
  • Jose Martinez went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI.
  • Mitchell Boggs allowed 5 runs on 8 hits and a walk, while striking out 4. 4 of the runs were unearned, but I’m not seeing any errors in the boxscores, other then his own.
  • Nick Webber struck out 4 in 2 innings.

Palm Beach 4, Lakeland 3

  • Adam Ottavino gave up 3 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits and no walks, striking out 4 over 5 innings. Adam’s starting to walk less and less batters. After walking nearly 4 per 9 innings, this month he’s walking 2.59 per 9.
  • Jim Rapoport went 1 for 3 with a triple.
  • Brandon Yarbrough and Isaias Garcia both doubled.

Quad Cities 13, Great Lakes 7

  • Overall, the team pounded out 20 hits.
  • Christian Reyes went 4 for 6 with a homer and scored 3 runs, while driving in a pair. He also was caught stealing.
  • Playing 1st base tonight, Steve Hill went 3 for 6 with a double and a pair of strikeouts.
  • Arnoldi Cruz went 2 for 4 with a walk.
  • C Nick Derba went 2 for 4 and allowed 2 stolen bases.
  • Elvis Hernandez allowed a couple of homers, and had 5 earned runs against him over 3.1 innings.

Batavia 4, Tri-City 8

  • David Kopp came off the DL and threw 2 innings, allowing a hit and 3 walks over 2 innings. Encouragingly, he had a 5-1 ground out to fly out ratio.
  • Clayton Long got hammered, allowing 6 runs on 7 hits and a walk over 2 innings.
  • Former indy leaguer Justin Fiske struck out 2 of the 4 batters he faced.
  • Andrew Brown went 2 for 3 with a walk.
  • Will Groff went 2 for 4 with 2 K’s.
  • The team dropped to 7-21, the worst record in the NY Penn. Not good.

Johnson City 4, Kingsport 1

  • Casey Mulligan went 2 for 3 with a walk and a double.
  • Jonathon Edwards went 0 for 5 with 2 k’s. After being considered one of the team’s better prospects, he’s struck out in 35% of his at bats, and is hitting less then a .700 OPS.
  • Nick Vera went 2 for 4.
  • Beau Riportella went 2 for 5.
  • C Roberto Espinoza hit a homer in his first Appy League game.
  • 19 year old Jose Arredondo struck out 4 in 5 innings, allowing just a hit. Last season for the DLS team, he fanned 48 in 50 IP.
  • Senger Peralta allowed no hits and struck out 4 in 3 innings, but did walk 3 and allowed a run.

GCL Cards 5, GCL Mets 9

  • What in the heck is happening with Gary Daley? In his 3rd rehab start, he gave up 4 runs in 1.2 innings, walking 3. He has a 21.60 ERA for rookie ball after starting his season in A+ for crying out loud!
  • Carlos Gonzalez struck out 5 in 4 innings, allowing 3 runs on a hit, a walk and a homer.
  • D’Marcus Ingram went 3 for 4 with a stolen base.
  • Guillermo Toribio went 2 for 4 with a double and a steal, and a throwing error.
  • Osvaldo Morales hit his 6th homer. He also walked and struck out twice.
  • Jairo Martinez went 2 for 4 with a walk and a strikeout.

  1. With all the pitchers now in Palm Beach, I’m hoping the Cards promote Ottavino for the playoff push. He seems to have the walk problem under control, and the SCards have a spot in the rotation for him. Rauschenberger is not going to be a playoff starter (I hope). Not very skilled on AA playoff formats, but I wouldn’t think more than four starters would be used. If that is the case, give Ottavino a shot now and a head-start on next year.

  2. In the Gulf Coast League boxscore, it looks like Carlos Gonzales threw three perfect innings. Then, in his fourth inning, he gave up the walk, hit, homer for his 3 ER.

The kid looks like a really interesting prospect. He’s listed at 6-3, 145, which is interesting enough on its own — I can’t even fathom those dimensions. I played high school football at 5-10, 145, and I usually thought I was the skinniest guy on the field.

But he also has given up just 12 hits and 6 BB in 23.2 IP, against 25 K. He turns 19 in 6 weeks.

The most interesting thing, though, is that he’s a fly-ball pitcher. Can the Cards deal with that? More important, will somebody feed that young man some cheeseburgers?

  3. Forget the cheeseburgers, send him a can of crisco and a spoon. or some weightgain 4000. Beefcake… Beefcake! That boy must be hollow inside. I was sick for 2 weeks straight in college and ended up at 6′ 145lbs. My roommates thought I was going preparing to move to ethiopia. Theory for his success: Opposing batters probably flinch, thinking one of his appendages is going to detach and impale them.

  4. You mentioned Anderson, but did you see that Ottavino was also in the “breaking into the top 100″ list? FYI

No Perez, which is a bit surprising to me, but I am more high on him than most probably. Wouldn’t it be awesome to have Cards in the top 100 after all of these years of one or two?
