Here’s a news release:
Notes: Brian Barden joined the Redbirds in time to start at third base last night after being claimed from the Diamondbacks on waivers. He replaces Jolbert Cabrera, who was released following Monday night’s game…RH Hugo Castellanos was placed on the DL. Veteran lefty Mike Venafro has been added to the roster. He was granted his release July 31 by the Toronto Blue Jays. He had been pitching for their Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse.

I didn’t realize Cabrera had been released. Doesn’t upset or surprise me, but they really should have informed me.

That article wasn’t too full of praise for Marti. More like the opposite. For some reason, I think the fastball would be the easiest pitch to figure out how to hit. If he is so strong, why is his bat so slow it can’t catch up to fastballs?

Is he the bizzarro Pedro Cerrano? (To stay on the Seinfeld topic.)

Mike Venafro is a left handed specialist with over 300 games in the majors. He pitched in the playoffs with the Rangers, Oakland, and the Dodgers. Overall his numbers are not bad and has a 2.78 ERA this year in AAA ball. He had a 0.00 ERA in 10 apperances in major league spring training with the Twins. They were pretty stupid to send hime to AAA ball. He is often passed by because he is not huge, but he is extremely effective against lefties and rarely gives up the homerun bomb. He has a 3/4 delivery and throws over the top occasionally as well really messing with the hitters. I am guessing he will be in the majors in September.

Perhaps Tommy Pham can be a relevant prospect next year. I would like to see a better OBP (more BB) and more power.
