I remember the days when Rick Ankiel was hitting HRs in Memphis. I kind like it when he belts a grand slam out of Busch III. Let’s head straight into tonights DPR.
- Joe Mather went 0-for-2 with a pair of walks.
- Nick Stavinoha went 2-for-4.
- Mark Mulder threw 5 innings allowing 5 hits, 2 BB and striking out 4 with 2 ER.
- Mike Maroth threw 2.2 scoreless innings allowing 2 hits, 2 BB and striking out 2. I don’t think he’s ever going to be a productive MLB pitcher again.
- Chris Perez picks up a bumpy 8th save allowing 1 hit, 1 BB, 1K and 1 ER. Just barely squeaked that one out.
- Jose Martinez went 1-for-3 with a BB.
- Cody Haerther went 0-for-4 with 3K. Maybe he’ll be one of our PTBNL. He’s been hurt much of the season but he’s a completely redundant part in the Cardinals’ syste,
- PJ Walters was the tough-luck loser. He went 7.1 innings allowing 2 ER on 4 hits, 4BB and 6 K. He recorded 9 of 16 BIP-outs on the ground.
- Jason Motte threw a scoreless 9th allowing 2 hits and striking out 2.
Palm Beach 2, Brevard County 11
- Jim Rapoport went 2-for-5.
- Dan Nelson went a perfect 5-for-5 with a double.
- Adam Ottavino was betrayed by his defense. That said, when your defense commits an error, you have to buckle down and not lose focus. He went 5.1 innings allowing 6 runs (2 earned) striking out 6, walking 3, hitting 2 and allowing 6 hits.
- Can Michael Cooper be one of our PTBNL for Piniero or Branyan? I’m so tired of seeing his make in the box score along with 2-3 ER.
- Nick Derba went 0-for-2 with 3 BBs,
- Arnoldi Cruz went 2-for-3 with a walk.
- Tyler Henley went yard.
- Tyler Herron got smacked around in 3 innings. He allowed 7 hits and 1 BB while striking out just 1 for 5 runs (4 earned). 2 HRs didn’t help his cause accounting for 3 ER.
- Marco Gonzalez was so-so on his return from the DL allowing 1 run on a hit and 3 BBs while striking out 3 in his 3 innings of work.
- Justin Roberson went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and 2 SB.
- Jesse Todd threw 3 innings striking out 4. He didn’t walk or hit a batter. I don’t think he’s a starter long-term but he’s got setup-man quality stuff.

Walters didn’t have his best stuff tonight, however he fought through it for a quality outing. He is a real competitor. He is confident on the mound and never gives in. When he allows a base runner he doesn’t give in, he will continually try to pick off runners on the base paths. He is a lot of fun to watch.
Another gamer at Springfield is Jose Martinez. It is never a throw away at bat with him, and he has even been taking a few walks lately, including one tonight against the opposition’s closer. As athletic as he is, is it really out of the question for him to put up numbers similar to Ivan Rodriguez, at least the non-steroid version of Pudge.
Don’t crucify me for this, but Marti, is a pretty terrible outfielder, I’m amazed he came out of the Cuban baseball factory.
Good to see Mulder and Maroth pitch well. Hope they can help down the stretch.
i’m pretty surprised at 4 walks from walters. that’s like, more walks he ever had in high school and college combined.
Walters seems to be able to limit the damage. A line like tonight is very solid and shows some grit. Not concerned about the walks—a freak occurence.
