Colby ranked #8 in BA’s Hot Sheet, the final edition of the season which wraps up who had the best seasons.
Like Bruce and Upton, Rasmus is a high school first-rounder from the 2005 draft class. And while he spent all year at the same level, it as probably the best thing for him developmentally speaking. Rasmus quietly put up solid numbers all year in Springfield, and then August happened. Last month, Rasmus turned 21, and put together his best run of the 2007 season, hitting .365/.455/.779 with 12 of his Texas League high 29 home runs.
The Swing are undergoing a name change, and the votes of the fans will have a big say on what their new moniker will be. The name options are Channel Cats, Current, River Bandits, River Eagles, Swing, and Talons. (”Do the chickens have large talons?”) River Bandits was the team’s old name. I want to know who suggested Quad City Channel Cats. That’s awesome. The logo could possibly something along these lines-
With the stadium being on the river and all, I think it’s a good fit. I do love me some fried cat, but I’m not so sure about getting it out of Ol’ Muddy.
Other news of note:
- Rasmus was named the organizational player of the month. Luke Gregerson was named the org’s pitcher of the month.
- Mitchell Boggs was named the Texas League Pitcher of the Week for his clutch 8 inning, 2 hit shutout performance that greatly helped the Cardinals clinch the TL North.
- Daniel Descalso has been called up to the QC. Antonio DeJesus hits the DL with a torn tendon sheath in his left wrist. Ouch. That doesn’t help the Swing’s championship hopes. DeJesus has a .371 OBP from the lead off spot. Descalso started off pretty slow, but hit .333/.379/.463 in August for Batavia.
- Dustin at Whiteyball has the low down on yesterday’s triple steal at Memphis, which none of us caught, including me. You all are so quick to point out my misses. Where were you people on that?
You definitely don’t see a triple steal every day. - milb.com previews the playoffs, which start tomorrow night and AZ is taking on the playoff edition of the DPR. Here’s the one for Springfield. And here’s the one for Quad Cities.
- The phantom of Chris Lambert has appeared to try and steal DanUp’s sanity.
- As I’m sure most of you know by now, Brian Barden and Brian Falkenborg were called up to the Show. For a couple of seasons Barden looked like he was on his way to becoming valuable utility man. Now he’s 26 and hit for a career low .683 OPS between Tucson and Memphis. I’d like to think he’s still the same player he was until this year, I wonder what has happened exactly.
Only one game tonight. so we’ll skip the jump and serve it up:
Batavia 3, Jamestown 2 (11 innings)
- Brian Broderick allowed a run on 3 hits while striking out 6 in 5 innings. The run came on a solo HR.
- Jesse Todd allowed a run on 2 hits over 4 innings, while striking out 4. Unfortunately, it was the game tying run.
- Thomas Pham went 2 for 4 and stole a base.
- Charles Pelt hit a walk off double to score Ateo Folli from 1st.
- Andrew Brown walked, stole a base and doubled.
- Travis Mitchell stole 2 bases.
- Pete Kozma went 0 for 4 and picked up another error.

“As I’m sure most of you know by know, Brian Barden and Brian Falkenborg were called up to the Show. I’m kinda hoping Barden can open some eyes. For a coupla seasons he had the look of a possible valuable utility man.”
And ew at BA, how did Snider have a better year than Colby again? And also BA saying Kennedy had better numbers than Joba, not to me he didn’t.
sigh….i need an editor.
Oh come on Erik you still missed one of the mistakes. Just remember everyone here appreciates what you do though. Just recommending something here but to see something like a “prospect smackdown” between Herron and Ottavino would be a very nice piece that maybe you or AZ could put together, I’m sure everyone would would love reading it, just a crazy suggestion though.
i have now idea what you are talking about. Know idea whatsoever.
Also, over on the BA Hot Sheet, Ankiel was the “Blast from the Past” player for the year. Not really a shocker there.
What needs to happen next year on the farm?
1-We need an OF not named Rasmus to develop (I’m looking at Edwards and/or Jones)
2-We need the pitchers to continue to develop (Herron, Ottavino, Garcia, and McKormick!!!!)
3-We need Bryan Anderson to develop some power. I would give him more time at AA
I am really looking forward to next year!
Paul- If Anderson stays in Springfield, I would like to see Yarbrough leapfrog him and catch in Memphis. Yarbrough really had a good season for Palm Beach and I remember when he was Daric Barton’s insurance at catcher in the system, so he has legitimante upside. Since July 1, this is his line: Same thing with Hamilton, if he stays at AA then Buckman should move up to AAA.
I agree on Yarborough. While Anderson makes himself more attractive for trading partners in AA, Yarby can be readying himself to become our backup catcher by ‘09.
