Game time is 7:05.
I’m pretty encouraged by the success of the Springfield team this year. When your team dominates its division in AA, it’s usually a pretty good sign of things to come. Credit should go to Luhnow and the scouting department. Players like Rasmus, Anderson, Perez, Garcia, Boggs, Walters, Craig, Hamilton and others were parts of the team’s success in varying degrees. Heck, some kudos goes to the old regime as well, as Hoffpauir, Mather and Motte have blossomed in ways few of us expected.
I’m putting up this game thread if you all want to jump in as you follow the games. Yes, I know the big club is playing tonight too, but let’s be honest. The 2007 Cardinals are a maddening and frustrating zombie freak that just won’t die, give them credit for that—but they are also nigh un-watchable the past week or so. If you feel like being a masochist, go ahead and watch the big club tonight. As for me, I’ll be tuned into the kids. You can listen to the game right here or here. I’ll post Gameday link as soon as it becomes available.
Looking at the match up, it should be a fun series. The teams both certainly have their strengths.
- Runs per game: Springfield- 5.04, 1st in league (out of 12). San Antonio 4.62, 4th.
- Runs allowed per game: SPR-4.55, 3rd in league. SA- 4.04, 1st.
- Defense effeciency ratio: SPR- .655, 5th in league. SA- .673 1st.
- K/9: SPR- 6.6, SA-6.78.
- Average age: SPR-23.6, SA-24.4
- Pythagoreon W-L: SPR-75-61. SA-78-61.
The Missions are the affiliate of the Padres, by the way. Springfield has bludgeoned its opponents to death, while the Missions have shut teams down with dominant pitching. San Antonio finished 4th in the TL South only to post a .609 winning % the 2nd half of the season. They are older, they have better pitching and play better defense. And they have Chase Headley, who has had the most dominant offensive season in the league, followed by Colby. Both have solid bullpens, although you have to feel good having Scherer, Motte and Gregerson.
What makes things tougher is that after Josh Geer, the TL pitcher of the year, the Cardinals face Cesar Ramos and Wade LeBlanc who are both solid lefties. The S-Cards have struggled to hit southpaws, hitting a collective .238 against, although that was before they had Marti and Craig who both handle them well. It’ll be a challenge to be sure, but I think the Cards should be up to the task. I hope you all will be joining in the fun tonight. DPR sometime tonight after the action.

You might add that Missions also have Matt Antonelli, who hurt the cards in a series earlier in the year. He’s one of the padres’ best talents, was a first round draft pick, and gets a 7 on the Jose Reyes scale of exciting.
I’m very cranky about the fact that I paid the full price for Milb TV back in May and have only been able to see about 3 STL-affiliate games. I really can’t believe they aren’t even broadcasting the playoffs.
Gameday link will be here, if there is one.
Cardinals in 4.
Amaury “the body” Marti MVP
winds blowing out…and headley goes yard. gah
He’s hurt Springfield pitching all year.
well crap…not good boggs. not good at all.
maybe Boggs has Been watching too many st louis games lately, thinks giving up runners with two outs is the way to make it to the bigs.
i think i’d give him a shot over maroth or the other crap we’ve seen…but yeah, bad start. the wind can benefit the cards too, and they got the offense. 3 runs isn’t too much to get worked up about. hopefully boggs can settle down
Erik, you don’t have the splits against these pitchers for springfield this season do you by chance?
sorry, can’t say that i do
rowlett twin killing. nice going, rally killer.
Ahhh… that would have helped boggs quite a bit to have something good happen there
Woot no runs
rasmus robbed of a homer….Gr..argh..bah..ack!
boggs pulling a mulder. blech
I like that Warner let Boggs in there, I think it’s the right move.
the difference between this team and the major leauge club is i feel like this team can still win when they are behind
webber: 1.2 IP, 1 hit, 3 BB, 23 B, 15 S. Looks like he’s ready to take over for Izzy…
Blech — I get back from class and both teams are in the toilet (STL has already been flushed). grumble grumble
