- Joe Mather went 0-for-3.
- Jarrett Hoffpauir went 1-for-1 with a BB. Will Lingo, during the BA Texas League Top 20 chat, labeled Hoffpauir as a “organizational player”. I couldn’t disagree more about Hoffpauir. He’s a 2B meaning he doesn’t need to have prodigious power and he’s always had exceptional contact rates. What really makes him an above average offensive player is his ability to draw walks. If he’s able to post a .360-ish OBP, which isn’t an outlandish expectation, he could be at least an average 2B for a few years at league minimum.
- Mitchell Boggs had a nice showing throwing 3 scoreless innings allowing a walk and striking out 2.

I was under the impression that walk rates don’t always translate well to the majors for contact hitters. The theory is that MLB pitching isn’t going to be affraid to pour the stikes in and make him hit them.
Nothing always translates well but Hoffpauir should demonstrate enough pop to keep them from just dumping fastballs down the middle. His walk rate would most likely take a hit going to the majors (it’s around 11-12% now) but even then he still could maintain a god OBP.
I think calling him an “organizational player” is a mis-assessment.
Most thought Polanco was just a org. player and a backup.
Things can change..we wont know until we see The Hoff play in the Majors…this past Sept. would have been a nice chance just to see how he could do.
But nah, those at bats when to Cairo and Branyan.
There was a sentiment that Hoff was one of the 10 best 2B prospects in the minors at Baseball Prospectus, so while Will Lingo is worth listening to, he is far from the only data point.
I for one, need to see another season to have strong feelings either way, but one things for sure his 2007 season was exciting and moved him quite aways up the prospect radar…
Boggs did not give up a hit and the walk got out on a double play. He faced 9 batters in 3 innings.

Hoff and Mather starting at 2B and DH again today, batting second and fourth again, looks like the same lineup as yesterday.
after an 8 pitch AB Hoff is finally retired for the first time.
LoL the Surprise are pouring it on Mesa 5 runs with only 2 outs in the first. Mather ended the Mesa half of the first.
But nah, those at bats when to Cairo and Branyan.
I think this was the thing about the 2007 season that made me the most angry. In fact, if Dewitt had used this as the ONLY reason he fired WJ, I would have supported the move completely. I could see giving Barden at bats over Hoff, maybe, since Barden is a potential SS, but not Cairo/Branyan/Miles. The fact that Hoff didn’t even get a call-up is ridiculous.
Stills was finally replaced at 1B by Hamilton. He is batting 7th but will be up last next time through so he may only get 1 AB.
