It’s fitting, in an eccentric kind of way, that Kevin Goldstein said the following of Colby Rasmus in his chat today:
He’s a guy some scouts have difficulty putting a comp on. He’s obviously a great prospect and a great athlete, but there’s some funk to his game. You can’t argue with the results, but he’s really not a fluid kind of player. [...] Nothing he does, from running, to swinging is especially fluid or smooth. It’s really not a concern to anybody I talked to as much as it’s simply an interesting quirk.
Razzle Dazzle has some funk to his game. Would you expect anything less?

i can attest to that. i don’t know how to explain it. he reminds me of a teenager who just recently grew to be like 6 foot and isn’t quite used to it yet. hunter pence sort of is the same way, or at least that is the way he strikes me.
the guy he gets compared to the most is grady sizemore, and if you watch sizemore he also fits that description. he is extremely athletic (had big time football scholarships if he chose that route), but he isn’t exactly smooth on the baseball diamond either. both rasmus and sizemore don’t have that picture perfect lefty swing that you would expect, and while both have great range in center both look kind of funny running.
I notice the similarities between Sizemore and Rasmus as well. Both guys seem a bit more “stiff” than a guy like, Andy Van Slyke for instance, who appeared silky smooth in everything he did. Johnny Damon is another guy who comes to mind in this mold, even though he can fly, he just looks a little stange doing it. It is difficult to describe, although apparently it hasn’t hurt Damon or Sizemore, and it doesn’t look like it will stop Rasmus either.
Hunter Pence is almost on a different level. He looks completely awkward and uncoordinated to me, but he also gets the job done.
Yeah who cares if he is awkward? as long as he can get the job done! Not everyone is smooth like Jimmy Edmonds…
Do you suppose that scouts who
first saw Stan Musial’s funky style
would have had trouble projecting him too?
If he can hit for average, hit with some power, run, catch the ball, and throw–and all are above average– who cares
if
he’s
quirky!
