Future Redbirds

It’s the spring version of the FR favorite, returning yesterday and hitting the ground running this St. Pattie’s Day. Football players ruled the day yesterday. On to the action after the jump.

St. Louis 2, ATL 3

• Brian Barton doubled off of Tom Glavine.
• Chris Perez threw 2 perfect innings, inducing 5 fly outs.
• Jason Motte threw 1 scoreless frame, allowing a hit.
• Colby Rasmus drew a walk.

Memphis 8, Albuquerque 1

• Who’s the man who’s got the arm that makes the ladies sound the alarm? BRAZ. Dang right. Dewon Brazelton allowed a run on 2 hits over 2 innings pitched.
• Adam Daniels, the Canadian southpaw, threw 4 shutout innings, K’ing a batter per and allowing just 2 hits.
• Ron Flores threw 2 scoreless and Mark Worrell closed it out, throwing a perfect 9th.
• Cody Haerther went 3 for 4, with 3 ribbies.
• Mr. March Mike Ferris went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI

Springfield 10, Carolina 9

• Shaun Garceau got blown up for 6 runs on 5 hits over 2.1 innings. I’m beginning to get a little concerned for Shaun. The man has good stuff, but he got beat around towards the end of the season and is now getting lit up this spring. Is he 100%?
• Stuart Pomeranz threw 1.2 scoreless frames. Meanwhile, his little bro Drew struck out six batters in 2-1/3 innings of relief work for Ole Miss State. Drew and Stu, huh?
• Jon Jay is hitting like he’s healthy, going 2 for 5 while driving in 2.
• Utility man Casey Rowlett homered and walked twice.
• A.J. Van Slyke, Son of  Slick, doubled, walked and had two ribbies. With his bloodline, I think him turning the corner is a definite possibility.

Palm Beach 9, Jupiter 3

• Jai Chul Chung, the Cardinal’s new Korean import, threw three scoreless. He fanned 3 over 3, allowing 2 walks and 2 hits.
• Josh “Mountain” Dew threw 2 perfect innings, fanning 1.
• Christian Reyes hit a 3 run homer in the 1st.
• Former Apply League batting champ Isaias Garcia smacked 2 doubles.
• Tyler Henley crushed a 3-run HR, which according to John Vuch cleared the second fence behind Field 3. His scouting report said he could probably hit for power if he wants. Me likey.

QC 7, Greensboro Grasshoppers (one of the many great minor league team names) 5

• Pistol Pete Kozma had two hits and a walk and had a pair of nice defensive plays at short.
• A couple of ex- football players ruled the day. D’Marcus Ingram singled, doubled and tripled, while Adron Chambers singled, doubled and homered.
  BYU grad JD Stambaugh threw 3 IP, surrendered 3 hits, allowed 1 ER, had 2 BB, 0 whiffs
• Dylan Gonzalez, 3 IP, 4 hits, 4 runs, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K’s
• Justin “Rules With an Iron” Fiske earned the win with 2 scoreless innings, 1 hit, 0 BB, 2 K’s
• Matt “Ace of” Spade picked up the save, 1 IP, 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 strikeout.

OK, I’ll stop channeling Chris Berman now.

Quad Cities #2 outscored the Marlins 5th team, 5-3

• The team played only six innings, but only had three innings worth of pitching, so you can’t really call it a win.
• Marcus Markray allowed two runs in his inning of work, while Steven A. Hill allowed one run in two innings.
• Charlie Pelt was 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored
• Charlie Kingrey doubled and tripled
• Matt Arburr “I’m So Cold” singled and had a pair of sac flies.
