So they decided to forget boom or bust and go with Wallace. I think this pick is OK. After watching his video, he is a chunky monkey. But oh, what a bat. At worst, he’s excellent trade bait. At best, he’s an All Star 3B. More thoughts in a little bit.

Chunky monkey? Classic. I still think they can play him in LF if he doesn’t cut it at 3B.
yeah, he actually has pretty good speed and could probably cover leftfield for a few years. lance berkman was a bad body guy too, and he lasted in the outfield quite a while.
He’ll be here by 2010.
In KG chat:
“Ryan (Santa Barbara): KG: Where does The Walrus fit into the Cardinals’ plans? Can he play LF? He can’t be worse there than Dunn right?
KG: Actually, I think he could be worse if given the shot.”
albert pujols — ultimate bad body.
I was so glad Weeks got picked by the A’s. He was a small rumor for the Cards.
Everyone says Wallace is the legit bat. If can stick at 3rd or slim down and go to left, good deal.
Don’t know how much “smaller” this guy can get, considering his massive legs. His trunk alone probably weighs 200 pounds. Oh well - it’s good to see the Cards take a polished college masher. . .
I’m not going to belabour the point.
Good luck to Mr. Wallace. Prove me wrong about you, kid.
Solid pick.
Cards did well with RH pitchers last year, and I’m not thrilled with the lefties this year, so I wanted a position player.
Excellent hitter.
He looks like a C or 1B to me. However, I could also maybe see him playing 2B, which is a need for the organization (and then moving to 1B as he ages). Seems like he has decent hands (but he is said to have bad feet which is bad for a 2B).
Does he remind anyone else of Ronnie Belliard?
second base….really….don’t see that at all
though a baserunner would have to think twice about trying to break up a dp
I hope Tim Murphy out of UCLA is available when we are on the clock for our supplemental pick.
Will Carroll: “This pick reminds me a bit of LaPorta last year (Wallace, I mean.) Get the best hitter, figure out where he fits later.”
the Brett Lawrie thingy can come down now, hes a brewer.
I’m with the Red Baron. I truly hope the kid proves me wrong.
Now, let’s move on to #39 - who are we hoping for there?
“second base….really….don’t see that at all”
He’s a big boy, but he’s evidently a reasonable athlete. The logical position for him would be 1B (can anyone say Prince Fielder), however we know he’s blocked there for 5+ years.
He must not have much of an arm, otherwise someone would have made him a C, and arm strength isn’t important for 2B.
Admittedly I don’t see him going into the HOF as a 2B, but I’m just trying to be ceative (and riffing on the resemblance to Belliard).
Berkman is another good template/point of comparison.
I love this pick, I have watched him for 3 years at ASU, we have a gamer, Cardinal fans will love his hustle, think a bigger version of Craig Biggio that will hit .300, with 25 big flys and 90+ RBI, and despite what critic’s say he is solid defensively at 3b.
What is his weight situation? I have seen 260 and 220.
That is an important factor.
miguel cabrera? ty wigginton? aram? not everyone who plays 3rd base is ultra-slim super-athlete.
Great pick! His bat will play in the majors regardless of position. Lets see if the Cards strength and conditioning staff can firm this kid up. Even if he turns out to be only an average defender at third, his bat will be a plus. I think Allen Craig will start to get some games in LF.
I like this pick
